And Michaels&#8217;s <i>Shred-It with Weights</i> workout is just that: an efficient, fun, adaptable routine that will show results in less than a week. But don&#8217;t expect any down time to rest or daydream. Michaels keeps things moving at a brisk pace, even in the beginner version. You&#8217;ll be able to need a small weight to do the routines. Michaels recommends the trendy kettlebell, but a regular four-pound dumbbell will work just fine. Then get ready to get your heart rate going. Michaels&#8217;s routines include some cardio moves with weights, like swinging the weight around the body, to keep the heart rate elevated, and to further tone the muscles. She also is a fan of lunges, squats, and leaps, all with the added resistance of the small weight. As at all times, Michaels offers several options&#8211;a modified routine for true beginners, and an even more advanced one for many who in point of fact need to challenge themselves. Having ripped abdominals may not make you a celebrity&#8211;well, unless you&#8217;re that guy on <i>Jersey Shore</i>&#8211;but in case you are looking to &#8220;lose weight, get healthy, and change your life,&#8221; as trainer Jillian Michaels puts it, then <i>6 Week Six-Pack</i> must find a spot on your menu. It won&#8217;t be easy; there are two very challenging routines featured here, each of which must be practiced five days a week for three weeks. Nor will it be simply a matter of lying on the floor and doing a couple of sit-ups. Michaels&#8217;s mantra is &#8220;shed fat whilst toning your core,&#8221; and during these two approximately 30-minute routines (Level 1 is hard; Level 2 is harder), you can spend a good amount of time on your feet doing vigorous aerobic work (marching in place, squats, lunges, leg lifts, and such, all designed to keep the heart rate up), as well as the demanding mat exercises, some of which derive from the plank (or upward pushup) position and thus build arm as well as core strength. The pace is quick, rests are few, and Michaels is a demanding instructor; there is not any coddling here, and the workouts are definitely not for the slothful or faint of heart. But she knows what she&#8217;s doing&#8211;her emphasis on the breath will be familiar to anyone who practices yoga, as will one of the vital poses she uses, and her attention to &#8220;keep an eye on, focus, and form&#8221; is helpful. &#8220;Bring intention to your action,&#8221; Michaels says, and judging by the hundreds of positive user responses, it works. <i>&#8211;Sam Graham</i><br />

When Jillian Michaels says &#8220;you&#8217;ll lose up to 20 pounds in 30 days&#8221; by following her 20-minute-a-day workout, imagine her. There&#8217;s a reason her <i>30 Day Shred</i> workout has turn out to be a national hit: it works. But anyone who&#8217;s ever seen Michaels work out with contestants on <i>The Biggest Loser</i> knows it&#8217;s not necessarily going to be easy. The <i>30 Day Shred</i> features three 20-minute workouts, each of which features, in rapid succession, short bursts of strength, cardio, and abs, and a cool-down. Sound easy? Think again. Even the beginner-level workout will have users&#8217; heart rates up. Michaels allows no resting between each short burst of exercise, which is a part of why the results happen so quickly. The transitions between strength, which can feature classic moves like pushups or reps with small weights, and cardio, and then between cardio and abs, are a mere second or two. But that pacing helps guarantee the results that Michaels touts. &#8220;This helps you burn more fat and more calories, and gets you toned that much faster,&#8221; Michaels exhorts as she zips through the exercises. There are a few modified moves for true beginners, but even for them, Michaels doesn&#8217;t cut much slack; <i>everyone</i> has to do real jumping jacks, and a large number of them. &#8220;I have 400-pound people who can do jumping jacks,&#8221; Michaels says &#8220;and if they may be able to do it, you&#8217;ll do it!&#8221; The only thing you wish to have to jump into the <i>30 Day Shred</i> is a set of small hand weights, and, if you have a hard floor, a mat for the floor moves.
